Which fast food chains are halal? NL, Belgium, Germany and France

We cook 100% halal ourselves, so let's be upfront about that before you read on. This piece is not about us, but about where you can eat when you're out. And since this year, that answer is more complicated than you would think.

Because 2026 is the year something really changed. KFC started with halal-certified chicken in France in January and did the same in the Netherlands and Belgium in August. Pizza Hut is testing it in France, Five Guys expanded in France and Germany, and the German chain Peter Pane joined in June. So every list from before this year is out of date.

Everything below was checked by us on 17 and 18 September 2026, at the chains themselves: their own frequently asked questions, their own restaurant finders and their own certificates. Where a chain says nothing, that is stated too.

The short answer

Almost no fast food chain in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany or France is fully halal. What you run into in practice:

• One product is halal, the rest of the menu is not. Think of the chicken at Subway in France and Belgium, or a few toppings at Domino's.
• Only certain locations. KFC does this in the Netherlands, Belgium and France: in those restaurants the chicken is certified, in the rest it is not.
• The whole chain, but in one country. Quick France is the clearest example.
• No pork, but no certificate either. That is something different from halal, and the two are often confused.

Why "partly" is usually the right answer

Halal is not only about what ends up on your plate, but about the whole route there: the slaughter, the supplier, the transport and the kitchen. A chain can arrange that per product, per location, or for the entire company. That difference decides everything.

An example that shows it well. In the KFC restaurants with halal-certified chicken the pork bacon has been replaced by chicken bacon, so there is no pork left in that kitchen. At Five Guys in France and Germany it is different: there the beef in a number of locations comes from halal-certified suppliers, but the pork bacon sits right next to it, on a separate griddle. The restaurant itself is then not certified. Both are commonly called "halal at Five Guys" or "halal at KFC", but they are two very different things.

Chain by chain, country by country

Four statuses: fully (the whole chain in that country), partly (certain products or certain locations), no (the chain says so itself) and unknown (the chain says nothing about it).

A dash means: that chain is not present in that country.

Netherlands

KFC has been offering halal-certified chicken in selected restaurants since August 2026, its own frequently asked questions state. In those locations the pork bacon has been replaced by chicken bacon and you can ask for the certificate at the counter. On 17 September, 21 of the 95 restaurants carried the halal label in the chain's own restaurant finder, including in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague. Use that filter, because the rest of the locations do not take part.

McDonald's Netherlands is the only large chain that says it bluntly here: the chicken is not halal and there are no halal products in the range.

Five Guys Netherlands likewise says in its own FAQ that it does not offer halal.

Domino's lists grilled chicken and Chicken Kebab as halal toppings, alongside a list of eleven products with halal meat. Note the nuance on another page of the same site: halal products are available in some stores. Ham, bacon and salami are in the same kitchen.

New York Pizza has a halal page with toppings and pizzas, but in its own FAQ calls it more or less a coincidence coming from the suppliers, and stresses that far from everything is halal. No certificate has been published. The chain does say it has not sold pork for about ten years.

The Döner Company lists veal or chicken for its kebab meat with the designation halal. Chicken Spot presents itself as 100% halal. Neither of the two names a certifying body.

Watch out with FEBO. On the ordering pages of individual locations the word "Halal" appears in a standard row of icons from the ordering platform. That is a generic legend, not a statement from FEBO itself.

O'Tacos says nothing about halal in the Netherlands, while the French and Belgian locations do. So do not carry that claim over to the Dutch outlets.

Belgium

The sharpest example in this whole article is in Belgium. Quick is fully halal in France, but Quick Belgium says through its own customer service that the beef and the chicken are not halal. Same brand, different owner, opposite answer. So anyone searching for "Quick halal" easily ends up in the wrong country.

KFC Belgium follows the same line as the Netherlands: in certain locations all the chicken is certified and chicken bacon replaces the pork bacon. On 17 September this was 6 of about 23 restaurants, including in Liège, Brussels, Anderlecht, Antwerp and Charleroi.

Belchicken states that all of its products are made with 100% halal ingredients, with certificates on request. O'Tacos lists halal-certified meat on its Belgian restaurant pages.

Subway reports that all chicken in France, Belgium and Luxembourg is halal-certified. The ham remains pork ham.

Germany

Germany lags behind the rest. KFC Germany says nothing about halal and has no filter in its restaurant finder, while the Netherlands, Belgium and France now do. What German websites write about it cannot be traced back to KFC itself.

Peter Pane is the clearest new step: since the summer of 2026 the crunchy chicken tenders, the crunchy chicken and the grilled chicken breast are halal-certified, prepared separately on the grill and in the fryer. The restaurant itself is not a halal restaurant, with bacon and alcohol on the menu.

Five Guys serves halal beef in eleven German branches, without certification of the restaurant. Hans im Glück and burgerme both say themselves that they do not offer halal.

At Domino's Germany there is an icon for "halal-konform" products. That word is deliberately chosen: it is not a certification. The icon is also not applied equally consistently everywhere; not on the sucuk products, for example.

France

France is the market where this is moving fastest. Quick states on its restaurant pages that the meat is checked and certified by the Association Rituelle de la Grande Mosquée de Lyon. That applies to almost all of its nearly two hundred locations.

KFC France started in January 2026 and on 17 September stood at 150 of the 409 restaurants with the filter "Poulet certifié Halal". That is well over a third, and the number is growing faster than the chain itself announced earlier.

Popeyes uses halal-certified chicken in all French restaurants, including the frying oil. There are also products with pork bacon on the menu, prepared and labelled separately. So say "the chicken is halal", not "Popeyes is halal".

Pizza Hut is testing halal in 29 restaurants. O'Tacos and G La Dalle work with halal-certified meat in all of their French outlets. Big Fernand says explicitly, on the contrary, that its meat is not halal.

Three misconceptions

"McDonald's is going halal in 2026"

This rumour is popular in French search results. We found no backing for it at all: no press release and nothing on McDonald's own channels.

Lists of certifications that are wrong

There are sites circulating that claim the chicken at KFC France is certified by a well-known French body. That body denied this in August 2026 and KFC took one such site to court. KFC does publish certificates itself, from a different certifier. So trust only the chain and the certifier, never a list on an unknown site.

"No pork" means halal

It only means there is no pork in it. It says nothing about the slaughter of the beef or the chicken, and nothing about what else is in the same fryer. Chains like Starbucks, Paul, Exki and Le Pain Quotidien make no halal statement at all, not even when their range is vegetarian.

Checking it yourself, in three steps

• Look on the chain's own site, at the frequently asked questions. If it is not there, do not assume it.
• Look it up per location. KFC has a halal filter in its restaurant finder in three countries. If there is no filter, the answer is probably no.
• Ask for the certificate. Chains that take it seriously will show it: at the counter, via a QR code or on a certificates page. Anyone who cannot name a certifier is making a promise without proof.

Frequently asked questions

Is KFC halal in the Netherlands?

Partly. Since August 2026 selected restaurants serve halal-certified chicken, with chicken bacon instead of pork bacon. On 17 September 2026 this was 21 of the 95 locations. Use the halal filter in KFC's restaurant finder.

Is McDonald's halal?

Not in the Netherlands: McDonald's says itself that the chicken is not halal and that there are no halal products in the range. In Belgium, Germany and France McDonald's makes no statement, so there it is unknown.

Why is Quick halal in France but not in Belgium?

Because there are two different companies behind the same name. The French locations report certification by the Grand Mosque of Lyon, while Quick Belgium says through its own customer service that beef and chicken are not halal.

Which fast food chain is fully halal?

In these four countries that is rare. Quick France is the largest example. Smaller chains such as Belchicken in Belgium and Chicken Spot in the Netherlands also present themselves as fully halal, although they name no certifier.

Does "no pork" mean something is halal?

No. It says nothing about the way of slaughtering, about the supplier or about cross-contamination in the same kitchen. Halal requires a certificate, not just leaving out pork.

How do I know for sure whether a location is halal?

Check it on the chain's own site, look up the location in their restaurant finder and ask for the certificate in the restaurant. If any one of those three answers is missing, do not assume it.
