Gemüse döner without meat: vegetarian and vegan explained

Warm grilled vegetables and feta, no meat: that is a vegetarian Gemüse döner. How it differs from the vegan version, and where to find it in the Netherlands.

We wrote earlier about the Berlin döner: chicken, warm grilled vegetables and feta, instead of the cold salad you usually get in the Netherlands. The question that came in most often afterwards: can that be done without meat?

The answer is yes, and there are two different ways to do it. They often get mixed up, and that is a shame, because they are two different dishes.

Vegetarian Gemüse döner: vegetables and feta, no meat substitute

The literal, original Gemüse döner is already a vegetable dish. In Berlin, Gemüse Kebap means that the warm grilled vegetables — courgette, aubergine, pepper, onion — are the main part and the meat sits beside them, not the other way round. Take the meat out and what is left is: warm grilled vegetables, crumbled feta, fresh herbs, lemon and the same sauces.

That makes it vegetarian, not vegan: feta is cheese. For anyone who does not eat meat but does eat dairy, this is the shortest route to the original — you change nothing about the build, you only leave out the meat.

Vegan: then the feta has to come off too, or be replaced

As soon as the feta goes, it is no longer a matter of leaving something out but of replacing it. Two routes are common.

  • Vegetables without cheese. The same warm grilled vegetables, finished with a plant-based sauce instead of tzatziki. Closest to the original, but it lacks the creamy feta bite that gave the dish its name.
  • A soy-based meat substitute. Some places do not run a vegetable kebab but a regular döner with soy "meat" instead of chicken or veal, and build it up from there like a normal döner. That is a different dish from the vegetable kebab above — it is often simply called "vegan döner", without the addition Gemüse.

Both are called "vegan döner", and that is exactly where the confusion sits. The first is the plant-based version of the vegetable kebab. The second is a regular döner with a different filling. If you ask about it at a shop, that is the distinction you want to know.

Where to find this in the Netherlands

We looked again at Helin's Vegan Döner (Linnaeusstraat 221, Amsterdam-Oost), the place we had already found for the Berlin chicken version. Live from their own menu, read on 30 September 2026:

  • Broodje vegan döner and dürüm vegan döner — "vegan döner op basis van soja", soy-based vegan döner, from €12.00. This is the second route above: a soy meat substitute, built up like a regular döner.
  • Kapsalon vegan — vegan döner with vegan cheese and salad, €15.00.
  • Dürüm falafel and kikkererwten dürüm, the chickpea dürüm — not a döner meat substitute but falafel or chickpeas as the filling, from €7.00.
  • Saksuka schotel — a warm vegetable mix of aubergine, courgette and pepper in sauce, €14.00. This comes closest to the first route: vegetables as the main dish, without a meat substitute.

What we did not find: the precise combination of warm grilled vegetables with feta, without meat and without a meat substitute — the vegetarian version as described above. Helin's chicken version (the Berlijnse Kipdöner) does have that combination, but then with chicken. Their plant-based options are soy döner or falafel, not feta. That is not a criticism — it is simply a different choice — but we do not want to present it as better than it is.

Why we follow this

We cook ourselves, every day, and we see the demand for plant-based food growing larger than the demand for meat with a different name on it. That is exactly why we give vegetarian and vegan dishes a fixed place on our own menu, not as an exception but as a full choice.

If you eat no meat or no animal products yourself, and you are looking for something warm and spiced in the same spirit as a Gemüse döner: our Vegan Dolma (pepper filled with rice and tomato purée, fully plant-based) and our İmam Bayıldı are both freshly cooked and delivered chilled. Have a look at the full menu as well for the rest of the vegetarian and vegan range.

Frequently asked questions

What is a vegetarian Gemüse döner?

The same warm grilled vegetables and feta as the Berlin original, but without meat. Vegetarian, not vegan, because feta is cheese.

How does that differ from a vegan döner?

With vegan the feta has to come off or be replaced too. That happens in two ways: vegetables without cheese, or a regular döner with a soy-based meat substitute instead of meat. Both are often simply called "vegan döner", even though they are different dishes.

Where can you eat vegan döner in the Netherlands?

At Helin's Vegan Döner in Amsterdam-Oost, soy-based vegan döner is on the menu, in a bun, a dürüm or a kapsalon, alongside falafel and chickpea options. Read on their own menu card, 30 September 2026.

Can the vegetarian vegetables-with-feta combination be found anywhere?

Not at the place we checked. There the plant-based options are soy döner or falafel, not the feta-and-vegetables combination without meat.
